On getting your news.
dearcoketalk: Dear Coquette, Where do you get your news? Growing up, I watched both my siblings reach a phase where they realized that the major news resources are heavily biased, so they jumped to the independent, conspiracy-theory-laden end of the spectrum and started eating it up just because it was different. As a result, I checked out altogether. I figured all news is biased, so why...

Dear Coke Talk: On personal privacy. →
dearcoketalk: Ok, I’m bisexual and I just can’t find the words to tell my mom. Almost everyone expects me to be gay, but they don’t quite know yet. I just feel uncomfortable not telling my family and I just simply can’t find the words to break it down and tell them. Should I fear about what they will say or…

This may be tantamount to sacrilege, but I prefer American Coke to Mexican Coke.

Nicki Minaj goes on the attack, but who's the real... →
A week or two ago there (I don’t know, I haven’t had an internet connection for a week) was a lot of kerfluffle about Nicki Minaj and her Out cover, which… Okay, yes, she is maybe sort of co-opting the gay community and being a little less than spectacularly consistent about it, but when isn’t there co-opting? The Eminem *stuff* is just sort of silly. Yeah,...

Dear Coke Talk: On ayn rand. →
dearcoketalk: HELP. I’m talking to an Ayn Rand bot. He’s an intelligent human being for the most part, just one of the many that have been sucked up into her selfish little vaccuum of self important motives. What is your opinion of Ayn Rand? What would you say to someone drinking her kool-aid? Much…

Really?
Because several gay people kill themselves because they experience what everybody else experiences, but because they’re gay, their suicides happen to be highly publicized because it’s a current cultural meme within the popular media because the midterm elections are coming up and gay rights are a big issue, we’re all wearing purple? Hurray for equality.

Why bother calling yourself “Anna Chapman” if you’re going to speak in a thick Russian accent and make Facebook videos describing your venture firm that is looking for risky investments in Russia—and record the video in Russian? “She came from Russia, with love” reads the lead about the accused Russian spy whose “cover” probably related more to New...

“When did pop culture become cooler than regular culture? Was it when Britney...”
– This is from a mission statement of a website I dislike. I find it insulting. It is a gross misunderstanding of history. Popular culture is by its very nature cool.  Popular culture knows no scruples. She flows through history inert and unerring. Leaving behind the drowned corpses of naysayers in...

I’ve just started And The Heart Says Whatever and after having read only the introduction, I have a few thoughts! (Of course I do.) Presented as a list, because they’re very tiny thoughts. I really need to stop buying books at the pseudo-chain bookstore that I’ve recently been frequenting (because it’s the only bookstore near the only H&M within Pittsburgh’s...

phoebeb: It seems to me that most articles that show up on tumblr’s “radar” and reblogged to all holy fuck could easily be retitled “shit that’s completely obvious but which middle to upper-middle class white people in plaid shirts on macbooks don’t know about until NPR tells them.”  Poorer people have limited, faulty, often dangerous produce in their grocery stores?!?  THIS IS BRAND NEW...
